You’ve heard of Farm to Table, well have you heard of the slow flowers revolution?
Did you know that 80% of cut flowers sold in the U.S. come from South america? They are flown in on Jets and only varieties that can be harvested that can withstand the trek. Then they make it to the florist then to you the consumer. Not very fresh to say the least.
The slow flower movement started as a way to encourage the purchase of locally grown, seasonal flowers that support local business and reduce the waste of shipping flowers from a county thousands of miles away.
Debra Prinzing was the visionary who has worked tirelessly to promote the use of local flowers within 1-2 hours of your home. Her website is slowflowers.com
Below is the manifesto
- to recognize and respect the seasons by celebrating and designing with flowers when they naturally bloom
- To reduce the transportation footprint of the flowers and foliage consumed in the marketplace by sourcing as locally as possible
- To support flower farmers small and large by crediting them when possible through proper labeling at the wholesale and consumer level
- To encourage sustainable and organic farming practices that respect people and the environment
Here at Wildflower Spring Farm when you join us for a u-pick flowers you too are participating in the slow flower movement. Here’s to the Slow. Slow mornings, Slow dancing, and slow flowers.
